Ten years ago a group of friends united by their passion for Brazilian music – especially choro, a genre of joyful instrumental music from Rio – decided to form a band. Alvorada’s first ever gig was on a sunny day in July 2016 on The Village Butty, a narrowboat moored on the Grand Union Canal in Mile End. It only seems fitting to mark the occasion by playing in a bigger boat and a bigger river – the beautiful Battersea Barge on the River Thames!
This special show will be celebrating the band’s journey over the last decade, with music from over the years depicting the evolution of Alvorada’s sound. Starting out with more traditional choro interpretations, the band now also play deep and intricate arrangements of original compositions. Their unique blend of rhythms from Brazil and beyond pushes the boundaries of choro while retaining the lively, spontaneous and playful character of the genre. Alvorada have been lauded by the Brazilian choro maestro Mauricio Carrilho as playing “with great authenticity, groove and brilliance”.
Since forming, Alvorada have delighted audiences at festivals and venues across the UK and Europe with their live performances, collaborated with top musicians in the genre (including Alessandro Penezzi, Gian Correa and Anat Cohen) and recorded two highly-acclaimed albums – First Light (2019) and Faz Tempo (ARC Music, 2024). They have also made multiple radio appearances, playing “music that won’t let you stay still” (Hannah French, BBC Radio 3).
